Instead, it is a distress signal from your body—a sign that you may be "trapped by dampness" (shī qì).

This article, from my professional perspective, will guide you to a deeper understanding of this concept. I will share how you can, through both professional massage techniques and at-home acupressure, rediscover a sense of lightness and vitality for the summer.

In the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, "Dampness" (shī) is considered a pathogenic factor, one that is especially active during the hot and humid summer months. We can understand it as an excess fluid within the body that possesses the characteristics of being "heavy" and "stagnant." Imagine it like mold growing in the corner of a damp house; it obstructs the smooth flow of energy.

This Dampness is divided into two types:

External Dampness (wài shī): This comes from the external environment, for example, from spending long hours in an air-conditioned room or getting caught in the rain.

Internal Dampness (nèi shī): This is often the more critical type. It is generated by the dysfunction of internal organs, particularly a decline in the function of the digestive system (which is governed by the "Spleen" in TCM).

When these two types of Dampness combine forces—colluding from both the inside and out—they obstruct the circulation of Qi and Blood within your body. This leads to those typical symptoms of heaviness, lethargy, and poor digestion.

As a massage therapist, my core focus is to promote "flow" within your body. When clients describe to me their feelings of heavy limbs, stiff joints, or sore muscles, I can often feel a sense of "sluggishness" or "stagnation" in their subcutaneous tissue during palpation. This is the classic physical manifestation of "Dampness" obstructing the free movement of Qi and Blood.

My therapeutic goal is to break up this blockage through a series of professional techniques like pushing (tui), grasping (na), pressing (an), and kneading (rou). Massage can act directly on the meridian system, much like a traffic cop directing congested energy channels. It effectively moves stagnant Qi and Blood and activates lymphatic and blood circulation. This not only brings oxygen and nutrients to your muscles but, more importantly, also accelerates the body's elimination of metabolic waste and excess fluid—in other words, the "Dampness."

Every massage session is more than just a relaxation of the muscles; it is a deep, internal "dredging project." When I use the warm heels of my palms or my knuckles to perform deep, gliding strokes on your back and legs, I can feel the tight fascia gradually soften. This helps to "melt" the points of obstruction that have been solidified by Cold and Dampness.

Western physiology confirms this: effective massage can significantly increase local blood flow and lymphatic return, which perfectly aligns with the goals in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) of "invigorating Blood and dispelling stasis" (huó xuè huà yū) and "promoting the flow of Qi to resolve water retention" (xíng qì lì shuǐ).

Therefore, when you feel lighter and your thoughts become clearer after a treatment, it is precisely because we have worked together to push the "damp turbidity" that was causing the heaviness out of your body, allowing fresh, clear energy to flow once again.

To enable you to bring this healing into your own home, I want to teach you a few powerful self-care tools, starting with acupressure (acupoint massage). You can think of these acupoints as the body's built-in "dampness drainage ports" or "dehumidifying buttons."

Pressing them regularly and correctly can effectively support your digestive system, promote fluid metabolism, and fundamentally reduce the generation of internal dampness. This not only prolongs the effects of a professional massage but is also an excellent path for your daily self-care and a step towards achieving a "Happy, Healthy Life."

Next, I will introduce in detail a few key acupoints that I most often recommend to my clients for "strengthening the Spleen and expelling dampness" (jiàn pí qū shī). They are simple to find, their effects are significant, and they will be your powerful allies in combating summer discomfort.

First is the Yinlingquan acupoint, which I often refer to as the "Chief Dampness-Expelling Point for the Lower Body."

How to Locate: It is on the inner side of your lower leg. You can find it by sliding your finger up along the inner edge of your shinbone (tibia) until you reach the depression in the curve of the bone just below the knee.

A Clinical Note: In my clinical experience, individuals with significant internal dampness will usually feel a very distinct sensation of soreness, fullness (suān zhàng), or even a sharp pain when this point is pressed. This is a testament to the point's sensitivity and effectiveness.

How to Use: I recommend spending a few minutes each day using your thumb to knead this point in a clockwise direction. The pressure should be firm enough to elicit that sensation of soreness and fullness. Continue for about two minutes on each leg.

This simple action directly stimulates the Spleen meridian, helping your body to resolve water-dampness that has accumulated in the lower half of the body. It is particularly helpful for improving edema-type weight gain and the feeling of heaviness in the legs.

Another "major wellness acupoint" that I highly recommend is Zusanli. It is your body's energy-recharging station, capable of fundamentally strengthening your "digestive fire" to prevent the formation of dampness.

How to Locate: First, sit down and bend your knee to a 90-degree angle. Place the palm of your hand over the center of your kneecap with your fingers pointing downwards. The point is located in the depression just outside of your shinbone (tibia), right where the tip of your middle finger lands.

Its Significance: Massaging this point can tonify the Qi of the entire body, especially the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach. A robust digestive system is like a high-performance engine; it can perfectly transform food and fluids into energy, rather than allowing them to stagnate and become dampness.

How to Use: Persist in applying deep pressure to Zusanli with your thumb for 1 to 2 minutes every day. You will find that not only does your digestion improve, but your overall mental state and physical stamina will also be significantly enhanced.

In addition to the two core acupoints mentioned above, here are two important supplementary points that can take your self-care to the next level.

3. Sanyinjiao (SP6): The Three Yin Intersection
Location: Find the highest point of your inner ankle bone. The point is located four fingers' width directly above it, just behind the shinbone (tibia).

Significance: This is the meeting point of three important meridians: the Spleen, Liver, and Kidney. Therefore, pressing this point not only strengthens the Spleen to resolve dampness but also helps regulate gynecological and urinary system issues, making it a crucial wellness point, especially for women.

4. Fenglong (ST40): The Abundant Bulge
Location: This point is on the outer side of your lower leg, at the midpoint of the line connecting the bottom of your kneecap to your outer ankle bone.

Significance: It is acclaimed as the "#1 Point for Resolving Phlegm." It is particularly effective for dealing with the thicker, more viscous "phlegm-dampness" (tán shī) that forms when dampness congeals. Pressing it helps to improve brain fog and that sticky, sluggish feeling in the body.

Naturally, to achieve the optimal state of a "Happy, Healthy Life," relying solely on passive massage and acupressure is not enough. We need to establish a synergistic lifestyle.

I always encourage my clients to engage in moderate exercise in addition to their treatment sessions. Gentle activities like walking, yoga, or Tai Chi can mildly promote the circulation of Qi and Blood throughout the body and, through light sweating, help to directly expel dampness through the skin—our body's largest organ.

At the same time, please remember the principle of "smart hydration." Choose warm or room-temperature water and drink it in small, slow sips. Avoid shocking and weakening the digestive system (the Spleen-Yang, 脾陽)—which you are working so hard to strengthen—with ice-cold beverages. Following this advice will make the effects of your massage and self-care twice as effective with half the effort.

Finally, as your therapist, I want to remind you of the importance of diet, specifically from the perspective of your body's physical structure.

When you consume an excess of greasy, sugary, or raw and cold foods, your digestive system becomes overburdened. The residues from these difficult-to-process foods can transform into a sticky "damp turbidity" (shī zhuó), which is then deposited between your muscles and joints. This is precisely the substance that I work so hard to clear away for you on the massage table.

Therefore, choosing light, easily digestible foods, such as steamed and cooked vegetables, is not just for the sake of your digestive tract; it is also to lighten the load on your muscles and joints. This allows the clearing and "dredging" effects of the massage to be far more lasting, enabling you to truly build a light and vibrant summer physique from the inside out.

In summary, the fatigue and heaviness of summer are not insurmountable. By understanding the core concept of "Dampness" and combining professional massage therapy, at-home acupressure, and intelligent lifestyle adjustments, you can absolutely take active control of your own health.

Please listen to your body's signals, try the self-care techniques I have shared, and experience the process of your body becoming lighter from the inside out. If you feel that the blockages within your body are more severe, I invite you to book a professional massage session so we can work together to give your body a deep "spring cleaning."

Together, let's create a blueprint for a "Happy, Healthy Life" that is full of vitality and joy.

Summer fatigue can stem from the accumulation of internal and external "Dampness," which affects the circulation of Qi and Blood and the flow of energy.
