Hello everyone, I am your Massage Therapist. In my many years of practice, I firmly believe that a 'Happy Healthy Life' is far more than just the body being free from illness and pain. It is a wonderful state where body, mind, and spirit achieve harmonious balance, and the whole person radiates vitality. This means having a strong physique to explore the world, a clear mind for thinking and learning, stable emotions to experience life, and a joyful heart to appreciate each day. Many clients come to my studio hoping to find relief from their shoulder and neck problems and rediscover this comprehensive sense of well-being. And proactive self-care is precisely the key to opening this door.Today, I want to share with you a treasure from ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) wisdom – the Jianyu acupoint (LI15) – and how it can help us care for our shoulders and light up our own 'Happy Healthy Life'.
Our shoulders are often the 'unsung heroes' in daily life, silently bearing the most. From getting up in the morning, dressing, and washing, to using a computer for long hours at work, handling documents, striving for better performance in sports, or even the focused engagement when engrossed in personal hobbies – everything relies on the flexibility and stability of our shoulders. However, when our shoulders begin to experience tightness, aching, or even restricted movement, our quality of life can be significantly impacted. That feeling of powerlessness, of not being able to do things as you wish, can not only diminish our capacity for independent living but can also subtly affect our emotional calm and sleep at night. Therefore, having healthy shoulders – allowing us to embrace life without restriction and free from the distress of pain – is undoubtedly an indispensable cornerstone for achieving a 'Happy Healthy Life'.

Speaking of self-care, acupoint massage (acupressure), rooted in the profound wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is an excellent method that is both gentle and remarkably powerful. It empowers each of us to actively participate in our own healing and to enhance our health.TCM holds that the human body is covered with specific points of reaction – what we commonly call 'acupoints'. These are pivotal hubs within the meridian system where Qi and Blood gather and circulate. Through applying appropriate pressure to these acupoints, one can effectively regulate the circulation of Qi and Blood in the corresponding meridians and promote the body's internal Yin-Yang balance. This helps achieve the aims of preventative healthcare, alleviating discomfort, and even boosting overall life vitality.Among the many acupoints, Jianyu (LI15) is highly regarded for its outstanding efficacy in maintaining shoulder health. It's not only a key point for easing our shoulder issues but also a significant support on the journey to a 'Happy Healthy Life'.
So, where exactly is this amazing Jianyu acupoint (LI15)? Finding it is actually very simple.Firstly, you can raise one arm out to your side (abduct it) until it forms approximately a 90-degree angle with your body. At this point, at the very top of your shoulder, between the acromion (the bony tip on the outer part of your shoulder) and the greater tubercle of the humerus (a prominence at the top of your upper arm bone), two depressions – one at the front (anterior) and one at the back (posterior) – will usually appear. The Jianyu acupoint is located in the more distinct anterior depression, which is in the central area of the upper deltoid muscle.Gently press with your finger pad; if you feel a mild aching or distending sensation, or detect a small depression, then congratulations, you've found it! This seemingly simple act of locating the point can, in itself, bring initial relief to your shoulders.

Once you've found the Jianyu acupoint (LI15), we can begin simple self-massage. It's recommended you use the pad of your thumb or index finger to apply moderate, vertical pressure downwards onto the Jianyu acupoint. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds (counting silently), then slowly release. Repeat this several times. This is the 'Pressing Method' (An Fa).Alternatively, or in addition to pressing, you can use your finger pad to perform gentle, slow circular kneading movements on and around the Jianyu acupoint, alternating between clockwise and anti-clockwise. This is the 'Kneading Method' (Rou Fa).Massaging the Jianyu acupoint on each shoulder for about 1 to 3 minutes at a time is generally sufficient. If it feels particularly good, feel free to extend this slightly. Importantly, throughout the entire process, coordinate with deep, long, and even breathing, allowing both your body and mind to relax, as this will enhance the effects.
You might be curious why pressing the small Jianyu acupoint (LI15) can have so many benefits. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, the Jianyu acupoint is an important point on the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. This meridian starts from the tip of the index finger, ascends along the outer side of the arm, passes through the shoulder, and reaches all the way to the head and face.It is not only related to our body's detoxification functions but is also responsible for defending against external pathogenic factors. Simultaneously, the Jianyu acupoint is also a meeting point of the Yang Qiao Mai (Yang Motility Vessel), one of the Eight Extraordinary Meridians. This vessel, in turn, is closely connected to our body's motor functions, agility, and mental state. Therefore, stimulating the Jianyu acupoint can both clear the local Qi and Blood in the shoulder area and invigorate the Yang Qi of the whole body. This makes it particularly effective for relieving shoulder pain and stiffness caused by the invasion of Wind, Cold, and Damp pathogenic factors or by Qi stagnation and Blood stasis.

Research in modern medicine has also provided considerable supporting evidence for the efficacy of the Jianyu acupoint (LI15). For example, many studies indicate that stimulating the Jianyu acupoint can effectively relieve periarthritis of the shoulder (what is commonly known as 'frozen shoulder' in the UK) and other types of shoulder pain. This may be because acupoint stimulation can promote local blood circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients, while simultaneously helping to remove accumulated metabolic waste and pain-inducing substances. Furthermore, acupoint stimulation may also prompt the body to release its own natural pain-relieving substances, such as endorphins, thereby achieving an analgesic (pain-killing) effect. These findings all give us a deeper understanding of, and greater confidence in, this ancient wellness wisdom.
For many common shoulder problems, the Jianyu acupoint (LI15) can exert its beneficial effects. For instance, 'frozen shoulder' (sometimes referred to by the older term "fifty-year-old shoulder"), which troubles many middle-aged and elderly people, is characterised by shoulder pain and restricted movement, with the pain often worsening at night. Regular massage of the Jianyu acupoint, combined with appropriate shoulder exercises, helps to gradually improve the shoulder joint's range of motion and reduce pain. For 'office workers' – those who spend long hours at a desk and frequently use computers – stiff and aching shoulders and neck are almost an everyday occurrence. At such times, conveniently pressing and rubbing the Jianyu acupoint for a few minutes can effectively relax tense muscles, improve local circulation, and infuse vitality into tired shoulders.
Of course, although self-massaging the Jianyu acupoint (LI15) is simple and effective, if your shoulder problem is relatively severe, or if the pain persists without improvement, I still strongly recommend that you seek the help of a professional Massage Therapist.A professional therapist can not only locate acupoints more precisely but, depending on your specific condition, can also employ various professional Tui Na techniques – such as pressing (An), kneading (Rou), grasping (Na), and plucking (Tan Bo) – to provide deeper-level conditioning to the Jianyu acupoint and its surrounding muscles and tendons. Sometimes, a therapist might also integrate methods like cupping or Gua Sha to achieve enhanced effects in clearing meridians, invigorating blood flow, and resolving stasis.Remember, professional assessment and treatment can offer more comprehensive protection for your shoulder health.
Integrating massage of the Jianyu acupoint (LI15) into daily life is truly like sowing a seed of health for our 'Happy Healthy Life'. Imagine: when shoulder pain is relieved and movement becomes free, isn't it likely our sleep quality will improve? And won't we be better able to engage carefree in our favourite sports and leisure activities?Long-term shoulder discomfort can easily lead to poor posture, such as rounded shoulders and a hunched back. Conversely, restoring shoulder function helps us to straighten our posture and project more confidence. On a deeper level, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes the shoulders also bear our stress and emotions. Massaging the Jianyu acupoint can not only release muscle tension but may also help us release pent-up emotions, bringing a sense of ease to the mind.

Caring for the Jianyu acupoint (LI15) is, in fact, nurturing our ability to pursue a 'Happy Healthy Life'. It reminds us that health requires the daily accumulation of good habits and patient, consistent effort. In addition to acupoint massage, maintaining good sitting and standing posture, avoiding prolonged sitting, and regularly performing shoulder stretches – such as shoulder rolls and arm circles – are all excellent habits for preserving shoulder health. When we start to mindfully attend to every subtle aspect of our body, we are truly adding building blocks to our overall life vitality.
In conclusion, the Jianyu acupoint (LI15) is a very precious 'health button' on our body. Through simple self-massage, or by seeking professional treatment, we can all benefit from it, effectively relieving shoulder discomfort and enhancing both the flexibility and function of the shoulder joint.I sincerely invite you, starting today, to incorporate massage of the Jianyu acupoint into your daily self-care routine. During the process, be mindful of your body's feedback and enjoy a moment of tranquility and self-nurturing.May we all, with healthy shoulders, embrace every moment of a 'Happy Healthy Life' filled with vitality and joy!
